A man wanted for questioning in the fatal shooting of a Jamaica Defence Force soldier has turned himself in to investigators, police confirmed.
The individual, identified only by the alias “Diddy,” reported to authorities on Wednesday accompanied by his brother. He is currently in custody and undergoing questioning by detectives assigned to the Major Investigations Division.
Police say the surrender is linked to the killing of 24-year-old Private Daniel Dale Crawford, who was shot dead on Tuesday night in a section off Waltham Park Road in St. Andrew.
Investigators have also named a woman known as “Kim” as a person of interest in the case. Up to the latest report, she had not made contact with law enforcement.
According to police reports, Crawford was traveling with a police constable when he received a phone call during the journey. He reportedly told the officer he intended to make a brief stop to deliver an item to a female acquaintance along Waltham Park Road.
The soldier then drove to Stephen Lane and exited the vehicle, leaving the constable inside. Shortly afterward, gunmen opened fire, fatally wounding Crawford. The attackers also reportedly chased and fired at the constable, who managed to escape without injury and raise the alarm.
Crawford was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
