One Of Two Wards Shot, While Attempting to Escape Metcalfe Juvenile Remand Centre

The Department of Correctional Services is reporting that one of two wards who attempted to escape the Metcalfe Street Secure Juvenile Remand Centre on Thursday, February 9, was shot and injured by the police.

The injured ward had since been treated at hospital, while the other has been retaken into custody.

Reports are that shortly after 5:45am, an assistant staff officer assigned to the institution discovered that the wards broke out of their dorms, and raised an alarm.

A search was immediately launched which led to one of the wards being taken into custody on the compound. The other ward jumped over a wall, and he was shot and wounded by the sentry officers.

A team attached to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) have launched an investigation into the incident.
