Danielle Dauphinais, a 38-year-old mother from New Hampshire, was sentenced to 53 years to life for the abuse and death of her 5-year-old son, Elijah Lewis. Dauphinais had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and witness tampering after Elijah’s remains were found in a Massachusetts park in 2021.
Prosecutors revealed that Dauphinais and her boyfriend, Joseph Stapf, subjected Elijah to severe abuse and neglect, leaving him malnourished, with injuries consistent with prolonged trauma, and exposed to fentanyl. Stapf had previously received up to 45 years in prison.
Texts from Dauphinais displayed a deep animosity toward her son, with messages referencing physical abuse and neglect. Elijah, who had been reported missing, was found malnourished at just 19 pounds, sparking national outrage.
The case underscored lapses in child protective services and prompted calls for reform.
