Constable Noel Maitland reportedly raised concerns about surveillance footage on July 13, 2022, asking a neighbour whether cameras mounted on his property had recorded him.
The revelation came during Maitland’s ongoing murder trial in the Home Circuit Court, where he is accused of killing his 24-year-old girlfriend, Donna-Lee Donaldson. Donaldson was last seen alive at Maitland’s Chelsea Manor apartment in New Kingston, and prosecutors believe she was murdered there between July 12 and 13..
Testifying on Wednesday, the neighbour said that Maitland called him twice on July 13, asking whether security cameras mounted on the neighbour’s house had captured any footage of him.
The neighbour recalled that Maitland claimed he was up for a job promotion and was concerned that the cameras may have recorded him walking by with a ganja spliff — something he feared could negatively impact the background checks required by his employer. According to the testimony, Maitland asked whether the footage had been stored and if it could be reviewed.
The witness said he told Maitland the footage was saved, but he was unsure how long it would be retained and would need to check once he returned home.
The testimony adds a new layer to the circumstantial evidence being presented by prosecutors, who argue that Maitland murdered Donaldson inside his apartment and disposed of her body in an effort to cover up the crime.
The trial continues in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston.
