Jamaica mourns the loss of Trevor Livingston Gordon‑Somers, a distinguished diplomat and economist, who passed away peacefully at the age of 87 in the United States, where he had been living with his family.
Born in Kingston, Gordon‑Somers built a notable career with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), serving in senior positions across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas. His leadership included directing UNDP operations in Guyana and Barbados and later acting as the Special Representative of the UN Secretary‑General in Liberia during a critical period of the nation’s recovery.
After retiring from the UN, he returned to Jamaica and continued to contribute to public life, including volunteer work at a community radio station. Gordon‑Somers is remembered not only for his international service but also for his dedication to mentoring young professionals and supporting local development initiatives.
