Over 3,000 Jamaicans were penalized during the 2025–2026 fiscal year for breaches of the Litter Act, according to Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie.
The minister made the disclosure during an interview on Cliff Hughes Online on Tuesday, noting ongoing enforcement efforts by the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).
The Litter Act prohibits the improper disposal of garbage and damage to public spaces. Individuals found in breach of the law can face fines of up to $10,000.
In a separate update, McKenzie revealed that several of the more than 200 pre-fabricated housing units donated by the Chinese government will be allocated to infirmaries. The move is intended to address accommodation challenges in areas severely affected by Hurricane Melissa.
The units were delivered to the island last Friday.
