Montego Bay, Jamaica: Montego Bay Convention Centre Hosts Evacuated Tourists – Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, has announced that 84 individuals are currently being accommodated in emergency shelters across St. James due to Hurricane Beryl.
In an interview with JIS News, Mayor Vernon reported that 50 of these individuals are tourists evacuated from the Zoetry Hotel in Rose Hall. They are being housed at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, which has been designated as the tourism shelter.
The remaining 34 individuals, mostly elderly persons, are spread across 13 shelters. “We have about three children and possibly a small number of homeless persons,” added Councillor Vernon.
The shelters are under active monitoring by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), public health specialists from St. James Public Health Services, and the Poor Relief team from the St. James Municipal Corporation.
In addition, Mayor Vernon reported that two incidents of fallen trees in Ramble Hill and John’s Hall have been addressed. “The road is now accessible, and persons delivering essential services or for emergency purposes may utilise them,” he confirmed.
Councillor Vernon also reassured the public that, as of now, there are no blocked roads. “We are in a stable condition, in terms of the weather being [not as bad as] we [were] anticipating; things are under control and being managed,” he stated.
