Valeria Marquez, a 23-year-old Mexican social media influencer, was fatally shot on Wednesday while live streaming on TikTok from her beauty salon in Zapopan, a suburb of Guadalajara, according to state prosecutors.
The young influencer, who had amassed nearly 200,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram, was broadcasting live while seated at a table and holding a stuffed animal when a man entered the premises and opened fire. The livestream ended abruptly as shots rang out, shocking viewers and igniting immediate reactions online.
Authorities say the shooter may have posed as a deliveryman bringing a gift before launching the attack. Local media reports support this claim, though the identity and motive of the perpetrator remain under investigation.
State prosecutors have confirmed they are treating the case as a femicide, a classification used in Mexico for gender-based killings of women. The country has faced increasing scrutiny for its alarming levels of violence against women, with an average of 10 women and girls killed each day.
While investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the murder, Zapopan Mayor Juan José Frangie stated that there is no record of Marquez having previously requested police protection or reported threats to her safety.
Marquez was known for her beauty content, lifestyle vlogs, and candid glimpses into her daily life, which resonated with a growing online audience. Her death has sparked an outpouring of grief from followers, friends, and women’s rights advocates, many of whom are calling for stronger protections for women—especially public figures—against gender-based violence.
Authorities continue to search for the suspect, and no arrests have been made as of Thursday morning.
