SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine — The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the fatal shooting of 30-year-old music producer, Javon Basceosingh, by police officers during an operation in the Homestead community, on Tuesday afternoon.
According to police reports, around 2:00 p.m., a team was conducting an operation in the area when Basceosingh, a resident of Homestead, was seen sitting on a wall. He allegedly jumped down and ran into a nearby house upon noticing the police.
Police say they pursued him into the house, where Basceosingh reportedly pointed a handgun at the officers. The lawmen reportedly took evasive action and opened fire, injuring him.
A Glock pistol with a magazine containing four 9mm rounds was allegedly recovered at the scene.
Basceosingh was transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
INDECOM has since commenced investigations into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The oversight body will assess the police account and conduct interviews as part of its standard protocol in all police-involved fatal shootings.
