Mattea Issa fired a three-over-par 75 in the opening round of the Junior PanAm Games golf competition to share the lead position with Livieres Rodriguez of host country Paraguay.
Issa, who is the newly crowned Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf champion in the 18-and-under category, produced a scorecard featuring five birdies, four bogeys, and two double bogeys. Rodriguez matched her 75 to stay tied at the top.
Meanwhile, Trey Williams, a former Jamaican representative at the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship, finished the round eight over par 80 for a joint 19th position. His card included 12 pars, two bogeys, and two double bogeys.
Both Jamaican golfers have two more rounds to complete in the three-round individual competition.
The tournament began under rainy and cold conditions, which later gave way to sunny but occasionally windy weather for the 54-hole championship.
This marks the second Junior PanAm Games, with golf making its debut. Jamaica is participating in 12 of the 42 sports, including Archery, Athletics, Diving, Swimming, Badminton, Track Cycling, Fencing, Rugby, Sailing, Tennis, and Wrestling.
