Kingston, Jamaica: Police investigators are continuing their probe into a major gun and ammunition seizure at Kingston Wharf on Wednesday.
A shipment of five barrels, ostensibly containing groceries and clothing, was found to contain a cache of illegal firearms and ammunition. The haul included three fully assembled firearms, numerous gun parts, and a staggering 2,819 rounds of assorted ammunition.
According to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID), the gun parts have the potential to assemble an additional 39 weapons. This significant seizure is the result of intelligence-led operations and collaboration between the FNID and the Jamaica Customs Agency’s Contraband Enforcement Team.
Senior Superintendent of Police Samuel Blake, Head of the FNID, described the seizure as a major blow to organized crime. He emphasized the importance of such operations in safeguarding Jamaican communities, particularly during the upcoming festive season. The FNID is working closely with local and international law enforcement agencies to identify the individuals behind this illicit shipment.
The Jamaica Customs Agency noted that the seizure was made during routine operations aimed at detecting anomalies in incoming shipments. The agency highlighted the challenges of maintaining vigilance during the high-traffic Christmas season.
