Commodore, St Catherine (McKoy’s News) — A Sunday night of peace turned into chaos and heartbreak in Commodore, Linstead, when gunmen posing as police officers unleashed a hail of bullets on a family yard, leaving nine people shot — five dead, including a four-year-old child.
The bloody attack took place around 8:45 p.m. along Commodore main road, when several men wearing police-style vests stormed the premises and opened fire without mercy. Residents say the gunmen shouted “Police!” before spraying the yard with bullets.
The deceased have been identified as:
- Shannon Gordon, 4, student of Rosemount Primary & Infant School
- Mario Sullivan, 42, of Rosemount District
- Jushane Edwards, 19, of Rosemount District
- Iysha Washington, 39, vendor of Rosemount District
- Famous Amos, 22, security guard of Commodore
According to police, six males and three females were shot; two females and three males succumbed to their injuries.
“A Scene of Horror,”
Says ACP Phillips
Assistant Commissioner of Police Christopher Phillips, head of Area 5, described the scene as “very unfortunate and awful.”
“Nine persons were shot, five persons have so far been confirmed dead,” ACP Phillips told reporters. “We are trying to determine what triggered such an awful situation. The community of Linstead has been doing well — this really comes as a shock.”
ACP Phillips added that the location was known to police due to long-standing family conflicts, suggesting the attack may be tied to ongoing gang warfare in the area.
“Unfortunately, among the numbers, we have a four-year-old who was brutally killed… the community is in shock.”
When McKoy’s News visited the area, distraught residents spoke of the horror that unfolded before their eyes.
“Mi cya sleep from night, mi still hear di shot dem inna mi ears,” one woman said, trembling. “Dem kill di baby, Lord God, dis nuh right.”
Another man, shaking his head, added,
“Linstead did calm fi months now. Nobody expect dis kinda wickedness.”
Heavy police and military presence flooded the community Sunday night into Monday morning as investigators combed the area for clues.
ACP Phillips revealed that Linstead had recorded only eight murders so far this year, compared to over 20 in the same period last year.
“Linstead was doing pretty well,” he said. “So this really hit the community hard.”
Detectives from the Major Investigation Division (MID) are leading the probe. Police believe the attack may have stemmed from a feud between rival gangs, but investigations are continuing.
The Commodore community remains tense as residents mourn the loss of innocent lives — including young Shannon Gordon, whose death has left the parish heartbroken.
