ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — A 41-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his brother-in-law during a domestic dispute in Slipe, St Elizabeth, has surrendered to police.
A senior police source said the suspect was taken into custody sometime before middays Saturday after reportedly hiding from police in the Black River Morass.
According to the source, the man was contacted by telephone and, following negotiations, surrendered peacefully.
However, police said the firearm believed to have been used in the killing has not been recovered.
The victim has been identified as 32-year-old Kyle Campbell, otherwise called “Son Son”, a resident of Slipe.
Police said that about 5:30 p.m. Friday, Campbell and the suspect were involved in an altercation when Campbell allegedly armed himself with a machete.
The suspect reportedly pulled a firearm and shot Campbell.
Campbell was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His brother-in-law fled the scene following the shooting.
Police said their investigations indicate that the two men had been involved in a long-standing dispute over land.
The killing has pushed the number of homicides recorded in St Elizabeth since the start of the year to 21.
The latest incident comes amid renewed calls from the police for residents to seek assistance in resolving domestic disputes.
On Tuesday, Operations Officer Deputy Superintendent Owen Brown urged residents to utilise the Domestic Violence Intervention Centre in Santa Cruz to mediate disputes and find peaceful solutions.
The appeal followed the killing of 50-year-old Nicole Brown, whose body was reportedly dumped in Barton Wharf, Lacovia, allegedly by her 41-year-old partner.
Investigations into Campbell’s killing are ongoing.
