A 33-year-old man was fatally shot and an illegal firearm seized during an alleged police shootout in Olympic Gardens, St Andrew, on Thursday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Swayne “Black Gad” Robinson of Bottom Halse Hall, May Pen, Clarendon.
According to police reports, a team armed with a search warrant went to the area at about 4:45 am to locate Robinson, who was listed as a person of interest.
The police said upon arrival, the team breached a premises using a ballistic shield and encountered four people. Robinson reportedly fled and entered a nearby house, where officers pursued him.
Police allege that when they entered the house, Robinson pointed a firearm at them and opened fire, striking the ballistic shield. Officers reportedly returned fire, hitting Robinson, who fell to the ground while holding the weapon.
The firearm, described as a black 9mm pistol with a magazine containing three rounds, was recovered by police.
Robinson was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police said preliminary intelligence suggests Robinson was allegedly a member of a gang and was planning a gun attack on an unidentified man in the St Andrew South Division.
Authorities also said further intelligence indicates the planned attack was linked to the absence of a prohibited weapon. Robinson was released from prison in 2023.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
