Manchester, Jamaica – Tensions ran high at the Nashville bus park in Mandeville on Tuesday morning after a man was allegedly mobbed by angry taxi operators and commuters following an attack on a taxi driver with an iron pipe.
The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. and brought the busy transport hub to a temporary standstill.
According to eyewitness accounts, the man entered the bus park aggressively, asking about a bus to Spanish Town. His erratic behavior quickly drew attention.
“I saw him walk in and ask for the Spanish Town bus in a hostile way. I didn’t answer him,” one eyewitness recounted. “Then he pulled out a knife and approached a woman, saying, ‘a bet mi kill you’. That’s when I walked off and ran to the police station to report it.”
While the witness was en route to the nearby Mandeville Police Station, the man reportedly attacked a taxi operator, striking him in the head with an iron pipe. In response, other taxi drivers and bystanders quickly intervened, allegedly beating the man multiple times in retaliation.
Police arrived shortly after, firing warning shots into the air to disperse the angry crowd and bring the situation under control.
Both the alleged attacker and the injured taxi operator were taken for medical attention. Their conditions have not yet been disclosed.
A police investigation is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and collecting witness statements to determine the full sequence of events. No arrests have been confirmed as yet.
The incident has reignited concerns about safety and mental health issues in public spaces, with several commuters calling for increased police presence at transportation hubs.
