Manchester, Jamaica — A 57-year-old man is dead following a two-vehicle collision near the Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000 in Manchester on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Wayne Campbell, a resident of Old Porus Road in the parish.
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 4:50 p.m. when Campbell, who was driving a black Mitsubishi Colt, attempted to make a U-turn near the point where the median barrier ends on the westbound side of the highway. During the maneuver, his vehicle was struck by a Toyota Hiace that was also traveling westbound.
Campbell sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police are reminding motorists that it is illegal to perform U-turns from the westbound to the eastbound lanes at that location, urging drivers instead to use the Williamsfield roundabout.
Since the opening of the May Pen to Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000 in September 2023, residents of Porus and surrounding areas have been calling for direct access to the highway. Although political representatives have promised a Porus link, motorists heading westbound from Kingston currently must exit at Toll Gate to access Clarendon Park and continue on to Porus—an option many residents say is inconvenient.
The newly opened section of the highway spans approximately 23 kilometres of four-lane road on a new alignment, plus five kilometres along the upgraded Melrose Hill Bypass. The road remains toll-free at this time
