Man Killed Following Confrontation with Cop in Alleged ‘Dispute Over Woman

St Ann, Jamaica – A late-night confrontation reportedly stemming from a dispute over a woman has resulted in the fatal shooting of a man in the quiet community of Watt Town.

Dead is Oneil Watson of Harris Town, Watt Town.

Police report that shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, a constable attached to a St James police station was preparing to leave the area after visiting a friend in a section known as Bump, approximately ten miles south of Brown’s Town. The officer, who was off duty at the time, was armed with his service pistol.

Investigators allege that Watson approached the constable’s motor vehicle, opened the driver’s door, and attempted to pull him from the car. During the ensuing struggle, the officer reportedly fell to the ground. Police further state that Watson accused the constable of being on his “turf,” lifted a large stone in a threatening manner, and made a death threat.

The constable discharged two rounds, hitting Watson. He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Residents, however, have disputed the official account. Some community members claim Watson had a relationship with the woman the officer was visiting and have alleged that the scene was disturbed prior to the arrival of investigators.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has been notified and is expected to conduct a probe into the fatal incident.
