Authorities in St Andrew North have launched an investigation after a man evaded police, abandoning a bag containing a firearm and items linked to law enforcement in Gordon Town.
Reports indicate that the incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon while officers were conducting routine patrols in the Cornfield district. During the operation, a man walking along a roadway with a bag drew the attention of the police.
Upon noticing the officers, the individual reportedly discarded the bag and ran into a nearby gully, successfully escaping the scene.
A subsequent search of the abandoned bag uncovered a .38 revolver with its serial number removed, along with a police-issued denim shirt and a ballistic vest. Investigators also reported the presence of a welding rod among the contents.
Police have expressed concern over the discovery of official gear, noting that such items could potentially be used for impersonation or other unlawful activities.
The St Andrew North Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) is now leading efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect. The latest seizure increases the number of illegal firearms confiscated in the division to eight since the beginning of the year.
Members of the public with relevant information are being encouraged to contact the Constant Spring Police Station or call 119.
In a separate but ongoing matter, detectives attached to the Constant Spring CIB are seeking 48-year-old Oniel Reid of Pleasant Valley, Red Hills. Reid is wanted in connection with an illegal firearm discovered at his premises, from which he fled.
