St Elizabeth, Jamaica – One man was shot and killed during a police operation in Cambridge, St Elizabeth on Tuesday morning.
According to reports from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the incident occurred around 5:15 a.m. during an intelligence-led operation targeting George Griffiths, otherwise called “Cookie.” During the confrontation, Griffiths was reportedly shot and injured. He was transported to the Black River Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police say a Smith and Wesson firearm was recovered from the scene.
Griffiths had previously been charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition in April 2020 after a Taurus 9mm pistol was allegedly found beneath the driver’s seat of a Toyota Noah he was operating. He was convicted and later appealed the case.
In addition, Griffiths was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm in 2017.
The incident has been reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which is expected to launch a probe into the matter.
