Police are probing a fatal electrocution that claimed the life of a man in Warrick Castle, St Mary, on Wednesday.
Preliminary reports indicate that the incident happened in a yam field where the man had gone to work along with several friends. The group reportedly arrived at the location at about 9:00 a.m.
Sometime later, while clearing bushes in the field, the man reportedly came into contact with a high-tension electricity line operated by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) that was positioned overhead. He was electrocuted during the encounter.
The injured man was taken to the Port Maria Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Law enforcement officers who responded to the scene observed burn injuries on the body, which are consistent with electrocution.
Investigators have since confirmed that a JPS transmission line passes through the property where the incident occurred. The power company was alerted, and a response team from its Port Maria office was dispatched to the area.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force is advising members of the public to exercise extreme caution when working near overhead power lines. Residents are also being encouraged to promptly report any low-hanging or exposed electrical wires to the relevant authorities.
