Kingston, Jamaica — Authorities have made a significant breakthrough in the fight against gun smuggling with the discovery of 66 firearms and over 4,500 rounds of ammunition at Kingston Wharves on Monday.
The bust, which took place at the Kingston Logistics Centre in Newport West, St. Andrew, is being hailed as a major success in the ongoing efforts to combat illegal arms trafficking in Jamaica.
Investigators from the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) and the Jamaica Customs Agency intercepted the shipment, which had arrived from the United States. The firearms seized included 50 handguns and 16 rifles, along with the substantial quantity of ammunition, all concealed within two barrels.
The discovery was made at approximately 1:40 p.m. during routine checks of the incoming shipment. The police report that a Jamaican man, who also holds American citizenship, is believed to be behind the shipment. Along with another individual, he was arrested on Wednesday during a controlled delivery operation designed to further the investigation.
This latest seizure comes amid an escalating crackdown on gun smuggling operations supplying Jamaica’s criminal networks. Law enforcement officials are intensifying their efforts to dismantle these illicit arms channels, which have contributed to a surge in violent crime in the country.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the full scope of the operation and identify other potential suspects.
