Liverpool’s Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva died tragically in a car crash in Spain on Thursday, after their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames.
The 28-year-old Jota and André were traveling on the A-52 road near Zamora, when a tyre reportedly blew out while they were overtaking another vehicle, Spanish police confirmed in a statement.
Less than two weeks ago, Jota had married his partner of 10 years — the mother of their three children — making the loss even more heartbreaking.
“It doesn’t make sense. We were only just in the national team together, you’d only just got married,” said Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, in tribute on X.
‘We Have Lost Two Champions’
André, who died alongside Diogo, was also a footballer, playing with Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
Fans, clubs, players, and politicians around the world have mourned the brothers’ deaths.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) issued a statement saying:
“We have lost two champions. Their deaths represent irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything we can to honour their legacy every day.”
A photo of the brothers together in their FC Porto days has also circulated online, reminding fans of their close bond and shared football journey.
An Illustrious Career Cut Short
Jota, who joined Liverpool in a $93 million transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, scored 65 goals in 182 games for the club. He was part of Liverpool’s English Premier League-winning squad this season, scoring six times in 26 appearances.
He also represented Portugal 49 times, winning the UEFA Nations League twice.
Flowers and tributes were laid outside Liverpool’s Anfield stadium, with many fans expressing shock and sorrow at his untimely passing.
Liverpool FC said in a statement:
“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and requests the privacy of Diogo and André’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.”
Emotional Tributes Pour In
Jota’s teammate Harvey Elliott described him as “humble, hardworking, and kind”, posting on Instagram:
“Diogo, I can’t believe you’re gone. It’s hard to put into words how much this hurts us. You were an incredible footballer, the kind that made a difference every single time you stepped on the field. You were always there for anyone that needed anything.”
Liverpool midfielder Ruben Neves added:
“They say we only lose people when we forget them. I will never forget you.”
‘A Sad Day for Sport’
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro called it “a sad day for football and for national and international sports,” adding that Jota “greatly honoured Portugal’s name.”
President of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença, said:
“Portuguese football is devastated. Diogo was what we all want to be — a reference for Portuguese football, a talent of his generation.”
The Premier League also issued a statement saying they are “shocked and devastated” by the news.
Investigations Ongoing
Police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash. A burned patch of grass was visible at the crash site along the roadside.
Meanwhile, UEFA has announced that a minute of silence will be observed at all Thursday and Friday matches at the Women’s Euros in Switzerland in memory of Jota and his brother.
As the football world mourns this tragic loss, the legacy of Diogo and André — both on and off the pitch — will continue to inspire generations to come.
