The prostate is a small gland located in front of the rectum, right between the bladder and the penis. The urethra is a tube that allows urine to pass from the bladder to the penis that runs the middle of the prostate. The prostate also secretes fluid that helps to make up the semen that nourishes and protects sperm
BPH
It is recommended by age 50 years old, all men commence yearly prostate examinations to screen for prostate problems. The prostate grows with age and by that time the prostate is large enough to prevent free flow of urine through the urethra. This condition is called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Jamaican men. It is a slow growing cancer so with early detection, it can be treated before it spreads. The risk of getting prostate cancer increases with age with most cases being detected after age 75 yrs.
Signs of prostate problems:
- Straining to pass urine or weak urine stream
- Burning or pain during urination
- Trouble starting and stopping while urinating
- Blood in urine or semen
- Passing urine frequently at night (nocturia)
- Painful ejaculation
Most men are uncomfortable with the digital rectal examination that is used for checking prostate. This process involves the doctor placing a finger in the rectum to feel the size and consistency of the prostate.
