LaToya Malcolm Laid to Rest as Scholarship Is Announced in Her Memory

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Family, friends and members of Jamaica’s pageant and entertainment communities gathered on Saturday, August 22, to bid farewell to former Miss Universe Jamaica contestant LaToya Malcolm, who died on July 17 at age 35.

Malcolm’s funeral service was held at Central Assemblies of God church in Kingston, about a month after her death. Her cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. (People.com⁠)

Malcolm competed in the 2024 Miss Universe Jamaica competition and later won the 2024 Miss Bikini Jamaica International title. She was also an actress, entertainer and dance instructor who had spent more than a decade in Jamaica’s entertainment industry. (Jamaica Observer⁠)

During the emotional service, Delano Seiveright, Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce and a friend of Malcolm, announced the LaToya Malcolm Scholarship for Resilience. The initiative will provide two high school students with $100,000 each to support their education. (Jamaica Observer⁠)

Malcolm’s pageant journey was marked by perseverance. She competed in 2024 despite losing her father earlier that year and later dedicated her Miss Bikini Jamaica International victory to him. (People.com⁠)

The Miss Universe Jamaica organisation expressed sadness following her death, while reigning titleholder Gabrielle Henry paid tribute to Malcolm, describing her passing as a loss to her family, Jamaica and the wider community.

Malcolm is remembered for her work in entertainment, dance and pageantry, as well as the resilience she demonstrated throughout her life.
