Jamaica’s Lamara Distin, a top contender in the women’s high jump, faced a disappointing exit during the first round of the Olympic Games in Paris on Friday. Despite her impressive track record, Distin only managed to clear 1.88 meters, failing to progress beyond the initial round.
Ranked third in the world with a national record of 2.00 meters set during the NCAA indoor season, Distin entered the competition with high expectations. However, she struggled to find her form, taking two attempts to clear both the opening height of 1.83 meters and the subsequent 1.88 meters. Unable to surpass 1.88 meters, her Olympic campaign ended prematurely.
Distin’s early exit was unexpected, given her recent achievements. She was a finalist at the last two World Athletics Championships in Eugene (2022) and Budapest (2023), and clinched the Commonwealth Games title in 2022. Furthermore, she retained her Jamaican senior national championships title in late June, albeit with a clearance of 1.89 meters. Earlier in the outdoor season, she had demonstrated her prowess by clearing 1.96 meters.
The former Texas A&M University standout’s early departure from the competition was a stark contrast to her stellar performances in recent years. As the Olympic Games continue, the high jump event will miss one of its brightest stars.
