The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) has officially approved the renaming of Ashoka Road in Waterhouse to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive, in honor of the track and field icon’s remarkable achievements and contributions to her community.
The resolution was moved by Councillor Byron Clarke, representative for the Waterhouse Division, during Tuesday’s council meeting at the Marcus Garvey Council Chamber in downtown Kingston. Fraser-Pryce, born and raised on Ashoka Road, has become one of Jamaica’s most celebrated athletes, earning 10 world titles and eight Olympic medals, including a record five 100-metre world championships.
Councillor Clarke praised Fraser-Pryce for being a beacon of hope and positivity, not just in athletics but also in her service to the community. Through her Pocket Rocket Foundation, Fraser-Pryce has impacted the lives of many young athletes by providing scholarships and grants.
“She is more than deserving of this honour,” Clarke stated, noting that the renaming will inspire future generations. He emphasized that Fraser-Pryce’s legacy goes beyond her athletic accomplishments, highlighting her resilience, dedication, and service to both Jamaica and Waterhouse.
Mayor of Kingston, Councillor Andrew Swaby, announced that further plans are in motion to celebrate Fraser-Pryce’s legacy, with discussions involving her alma mater, Wolmer’s Girls’ High School, and members of her Pocket Rocket Foundation.
