ST JAMES, Jamaica — The People’s National Party (PNP) turned Sam Sharpe Square orange on Sunday night as the party staged its final mass rally ahead of the September 3 General Election.
Among the key speakers was Julian Robinson, candidate for St Andrew South Eastern, who made a passionate call for urgent action to improve literacy levels across Jamaica. Robinson pointed to the high number of students leaving primary school unable to read and write, describing it as a major obstacle to the country’s economic progress.
“One of the greatest impediments to growth is that we cannot find enough Jamaicans to fill the jobs, because there are too many students who leave primary school and they cannot read and write,” Robinson told the crowd.
Robinson also pledged that under a PNP government, reforms would be implemented to tie student loan repayments to income, while cutting waste and inefficiency in government services. He further vowed to reduce energy costs to ease the burden on ordinary Jamaicans.
The rally, which drew a massive turnout, also featured addresses from PNP President Mark Golding, former leader Dr Peter Phillips, Julian Robinson, Dr Alfred Dawes, and several candidates from western Jamaica.
The event capped off a weekend of political campaigning in Montego Bay, which just one week ago saw Sam Sharpe Square painted in the green of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
