Judge Sets Firm Deadline as Vybz Kartel Retrial Hearing Begins

Kingston, Jamaica: Vybz Kartel Retrial Hearing – The retrial hearing for dancehall artist Vybz Kartel and his co-accused continued on Tuesday with a firm warning from Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop as proceedings entered their second day. Addressing the courtroom with a sense of urgency, Justice McDonald-Bishop declared, “School is over. We are now in court.”

Emphasizing the gravity of the retrial, she added, “We are now judges and you are now lawyers… This is no joke.” Her directive to the legal teams was clear: presentations must be concise and purposeful to ensure the case concludes by Friday, as no extensions will be entertained. “This case is set to end on Friday. We cannot go any further than Friday,” she stressed.

The retrial commenced on Monday and is scheduled for a five-day duration, following a protracted legal battle that has kept the public and media closely watching. The proceedings come after the court’s decision on May 30 to deny the release of Kartel and his co-accused on bail.

Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, along with Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John, were originally convicted for the September 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. Their convictions were upheld by Jamaica’s Court of Appeal in 2020. However, on March 14, 2024, the Privy Council in the United Kingdom, which serves as Jamaica’s highest appellate court, overturned these convictions citing juror misconduct.

The Privy Council’s ruling mandated the Court of Appeal to determine whether a retrial was warranted, setting the stage for the current hearing. Justice McDonald-Bishop, alongside Justices Paulette Williams and David Fraser, will deliberate on whether the retrial should proceed or if the charges should be dismissed entirely.

As the legal teams prepare to present their final arguments, the judges’ insistence on efficiency underscores the high stakes of the retrial, which holds significant implications not only for the accused but also for the Jamaican justice system’s handling of high-profile cases.
