Vybz Kartel Optimistic as Court of Appeal Reviews Conviction Quash

Lawyers representing Vybz Kartel and his co-accused, including Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St John, are heading to the Court of Appeal today in their ongoing bid for freedom. They are met with opposition from prosecutors from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, who advocate for a fresh trial concerning the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.

This appearance follows a significant ruling by the Privy Council on March 14. The council quashed their convictions due to juror misconduct, sending the case back to the Court of Appeal. Here, the court must determine whether a retrial is necessary or if the accused should be set free.

Legal Journey:

The legal battle has endured since April 2014 when Kartel received a life sentence, along with his co-accused, with varying parole eligibility. Despite prior appeals, their convictions were upheld until the recent Privy Council intervention.
