KINGSTON, Jamaica – A 66-year-old man has been ordered to find alternative accommodation after being brought before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on charges of assault at common law and malicious destruction of property. The charges stem from ongoing tensions between him and his wife of 30 years.
Ranswood Scott appeared before Senior Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell on Tuesday after his wife alleged that he had assaulted her multiple times and made threats against her life. She told the court that she feared for her safety and confirmed her intention to dissolve the marriage.
The couple currently resides in the same house but in separate rooms. However, the court heard that the volatile situation had escalated, with Scott allegedly making threats, spreading damaging rumors about his wife in the neighborhood, and cutting electrical wires at a rental property, leaving tenants without power.
Scott’s wife also claimed that he had once threatened her with a crowbar and accused her of being unfaithful. She further alleged that he had given her a health-related infection in the past and had recently demanded intimacy, which she refused.
Scott denied the allegations, but his wife’s attorney argued that it was unsafe for both parties to continue living under the same roof. Judge Burrell agreed and ordered Scott to secure new accommodation, warning that failure to do so could result in him being placed in state care.
Scott later returned to court and provided the address of his brother-in-law, where he confirmed he would stay. He maintained that the accusations were false and expressed difficulty in leaving his home due to his health condition.
Judge Burrell acknowledged Scott’s claims but stressed that the allegations presented in court could not be ignored. She noted that if the claims were untrue, it would make his wife a “very wicked woman,” but for now, separation was in the best interest of both parties.
The case is set for trial from April 29 to May 1.
