KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) says the national electricity grid could face significant challenges if Tropical Storm Melissa strengthens and makes landfall as a major hurricane early next week.
According to the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, Melissa is forecast to reach the island by Tuesday, potentially as a Category 4 or 5 hurricane, bringing destructive winds and heavy rainfall.
In preparation for possible damage to the power network, JPS has stepped up readiness efforts, with more than 50 additional line workers arriving on the island on Friday to bolster the company’s response team. They will join utility crews already in Jamaica from St. Vincent, as JPS intensifies emergency operations and pre-storm assessments.
The company says its teams are on high alert and are working to ensure a rapid response to any service disruptions that may occur once the system impacts the island.
