PORUS, Manchester — A Manchester man was shot and killed during an alleged confrontation with the police in the Trinity area of Porus early Thursday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Omer “John Crow” Campbell, a resident of Manchester. Police said an illegal firearm and ammunition were seized during the incident.
According to reports, at about 5:45 a.m., officers were conducting operations in the area in search of alleged gunmen when Campbell was accosted. He reportedly challenged the police, who responded by firing their weapons in what they described as self-defence.
Campbell was shot and later transported to the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police said a Hi-Point Model C 9mm pistol fitted with a magazine containing three rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched a probe into the fatal shooting.
