The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) announced that its Maritime, Air and Cyber Command (MACC) is leading an expansive search and rescue operation for two fishermen who have been missing at sea since Tuesday, October 29. The fishermen had departed Middle Cay in a blue and red vessel from the Pedro Banks, bound for Belmont in Westmoreland, when they reportedly ran out of fuel.
The JDF was notified of the situation and promptly deployed air and maritime resources to search for the missing vessel, beginning operations on October 29 and continuing through Friday, November 1.
Efforts were later expanded to cover areas in the southern, southwestern, and western parts of the island, according to JDF sources. To support the ongoing search, the JDF enlisted help from regional partners, including the Cayman Islands Coast Guard and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. So far, however, there has been no sign of the vessel or the fishermen.
The JDF is now collaborating with additional regional partners, including agencies in Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala, as well as local seafarers, in an effort to widen the search radius and locate the men.
“The JDF remains committed to utilising our operational capabilities to preserve lives and ensure the safety and security of all our citizens,” read a media release from the JDF issued Wednesday night.
This complex operation highlights the JDF’s dedication to protecting Jamaican lives, as well as its close coordination with international maritime and rescue agencies. The search remains ongoing, with hopes for a safe outcome.
