JDF Faces Questions Over Potential Friendly Fire

JDF Faces Questions Over Potential Friendly Fire in Soldier’s Death

Kingston, Jamaica:  The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has neither confirmed nor denied allegations that Private Ejay Domville, who was killed last Friday during a military operation in Denham Town, Kingston, may have been a victim of friendly fire. The young soldier’s death has sparked widespread speculation, particularly after his mother publicly questioned the official account of events.

Private Domville, who had been with the JDF for less than a year, was on foot patrol with his unit in the early hours of August 23 when the fatal incident occurred. According to police reports, around 1:25 a.m., Domville’s team was patrolling near Charles Street and Chestnut Lane when they came under fire from unidentified assailants. The soldiers returned fire and took evasive action, but when the exchange ended, Domville was discovered with a gunshot wound to his face. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident has led to rumors that Domville might have been accidentally shot by one of his fellow soldiers, a possibility that the JDF has not ruled out but also has not confirmed. The JDF released a statement on Wednesday, following a newspaper article where Domville’s mother, Calisha Reynolds, voiced her suspicions about the circumstances surrounding her son’s death. The military assured the public that it is conducting an internal investigation and is fully cooperating with the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom).

However, Indecom’s Assistant Commissioner Hamish Campbell clarified that their involvement is limited, as they are not the lead investigators in this case. “Indecom attended the scene because there was a discharge of firearms by the security forces, but no one else was injured,” Campbell explained. He added that the investigation, classified as a murder, would be further informed by the post-mortem examination, which will help determine the trajectory and source of the fatal shot.

In their statement, the JDF expressed their awareness of the public’s concerns about the potential for fratricide, acknowledging that the high-stress, split-second decision-making required during combat can sometimes lead to such tragic errors. They emphasized that the JDF’s pre-deployment training is specifically designed to reduce the risk of such incidents.

The JDF also highlighted Private Domville’s bravery during the encounter, noting that he continued to advance towards the threat even after being struck and losing his helmet. The military has made arrangements for Domville’s mother to be present at the autopsy and has promised to keep her informed throughout the investigation.

Reynolds, who described her son as the breadwinner of the family, expressed her doubts about the official narrative in an interview earlier this week. She revealed that when she visited the Tranquility Funeral Home where her son’s body is being kept, she was not allowed to view it, as it had already been identified.

As the investigation proceeds, the JDF has committed to providing ongoing support to Domville’s family, pledging transparency and a thorough examination of the circumstances that led to the young soldier’s death.
