A Jamaican man employed as a reserve police officer in Maine, USA, has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after it was revealed he overstayed his visa and attempted to illegally purchase a firearm.
The man, Jon Luke Evans, reportedly entered the U.S. legally through Florida in September 2023, but failed to leave by his scheduled departure date. ICE said Evans violated his visa conditions, remaining in the country illegally while securing employment as a police officer in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
Evans was arrested Friday in Biddeford, where authorities say he was trying to purchase a gun illegally. According to ICE Boston, Evans admitted he wanted the gun for his duties as a reserve officer.
“Jon Luke Evans not only broke U.S. immigration law but also illegally attempted to purchase a firearm,” said Patricia Hyde, acting director of ICE Boston. “The fact that a police department would hire an illegal alien and arm him is tragic, not comical.”
The Old Orchard Beach Police Department, where Evans was hired in May 2025 for a summer programme, stated that Evans passed all required checks. His documents were submitted to Homeland Security’s E-Verify system, and the department claims DHS approved his employment on May 12, 2025.
In a statement, Police Chief Elise Chard said that all hiring procedures were followed, including verification through Form I-9, photo ID checks, and federal clearance.
However, ICE insists Evans was “out of status” and not authorized to work or carry a weapon. Reserve officers in the department are issued firearms for duty, but are not allowed to purchase or own one privately.
The incident raises serious questions about internal vetting systems and how a non-citizen, allegedly in the U.S. unlawfully, became an armed member of law enforcement.
ICE has not yet disclosed whether Evans will face criminal charges or be deported.
