A 33-year-old Jamaican national is facing federal drug trafficking charges in the United States following a significant narcotics seizure by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Rudolph Hylton appeared in federal court in Fort Lauderdale on allegations that he was transporting large quantities of cocaine and marijuana from Jamaica aboard a 45-foot vessel.
According to a federal criminal complaint, the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Richard Etheridge conducted a routine boarding of the boat, identified as the “Lady B,” in the Atlantic Ocean approximately eight nautical miles northeast of Haulover Inlet. Hylton and another man, identified as Aldon Delano Brown, were on board at the time.
Authorities reported that both men are Jamaican nationals. However, Brown was not listed in Broward County or federal jail records at the time of Hylton’s court appearance and did not appear in court.
During a seaworthiness inspection, boarding officers observed irregularities, including altered panels and recent fibreglass work. A concealed compartment was subsequently discovered beneath the cabin floor, accessible through a small opening.
Investigators recovered 68 bricks of cocaine weighing more than 70 kilograms (approximately 154 pounds) and 14 bricks of marijuana weighing about 12 kilograms (approximately 26 pounds). The complaint did not specify the estimated street value of the drugs.
Court documents state that Hylton told investigators he and Brown had taken the vessel from Fort Lauderdale to Jamaica about a month earlier. He allegedly indicated that while in Jamaica, he was offered US$100,000 to return the vessel to Fort Lauderdale, knowing illegal narcotics would be concealed on board.
Hylton has been charged with three federal drug trafficking offences. He was remanded into custody at the Broward County jail on behalf of the U.S. Marshals Service and is scheduled to appear before a federal judge next Monday for a pre-trial detention hearing.
