St. Elizabeth, Jamaica – The girls’ bathroom at Black River High School has received a significant facelift thanks to the efforts of the Jamaican Diaspora in Canada. This project, completed under the Diaspora Day of Service initiative, was officially handed over to the school on June 20.
The upgraded facility was warmly received by Vice Principal Andria Strong-Moses, who expressed deep gratitude for the renovation. “We are immensely thankful to the diaspora, especially the members who coordinated with us directly. Their support has made a remarkable difference,” she said during the handover ceremony.
New Features and Enhancements
The revamped bathroom now features six stalls and three face basins, along with a complete transformation including floor-to-ceiling tiles and new doors. Mrs. Strong-Moses emphasized that the new facility creates a much more comfortable and hygienic environment for the female students.
“The girls were thrilled to see the changes, especially the large mirror that has been installed. It has transformed their experience and I know they are going to appreciate this new space,” she added.
Community Collaboration and Impact
The renovation was initiated after a member of the Canadian diaspora learned about the need for improved bathroom facilities from a female student at the school. This personal connection sparked a collaboration between the diaspora group, the school’s Parent-Teacher Association, and the Principal to bring the project to life.
“The project was executed efficiently and on time, thanks to the combined efforts of everyone involved,” Mrs. Strong-Moses noted, highlighting the seamless coordination and effective execution of the renovation.
Future Plans and Broader Impact
While the current project focused on the girls’ bathroom, Mrs. Strong-Moses revealed that plans are in place to upgrade the boys’ bathroom in the future, continuing the school’s commitment to enhancing its facilities.
The Diaspora Day of Service, an initiative that encourages diaspora members to participate in community projects across Jamaica, played a crucial role in the successful completion of this renovation. Through such projects, the diaspora community continues to make significant contributions to local development and improve the living and learning conditions for students on the island.
