Veteran Jamaican businessman and insurance executive Dennis Lalor, founder of ICWI Group Limited, has died following a period of illness.
Lalor, widely regarded as one of Jamaica’s most influential business leaders, passed away on Wednesday night, according to reports from the Jamaica Observer.
A chartered insurer by profession, Lalor built ICWI Group into one of the Caribbean’s leading full-service financial institutions, with operations spanning Jamaica and several regional territories. Throughout his decades-long career, he became a prominent figure in Jamaica’s corporate and civic life.
Beyond business, Lalor served on numerous public and private sector boards, including Air Jamaica, the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission, the Jamaica Racing Commission, and the Council of the University of the West Indies. He also played a major role in shaping economic policy during his tenure as president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) from 1990 to 1992.
Lalor was also celebrated for his contribution to Jamaican sports administration, particularly polo and horse racing. He served as president of the Jamaica Polo Association and Kingston Polo Club and was instrumental in promoting women’s polo internationally through the long-running ICWI Ladies Polo Tournament.
Over the years, his contributions earned him several national honours, including the Prime Minister’s Medal for contributions to business and sports. He was later appointed to Jamaica’s Privy Council and received the Order of Jamaica (OJ) for distinguished service to the nation.
Tributes have begun pouring in from members of Jamaica’s business and sporting communities, many describing Lalor as a visionary entrepreneur whose influence helped shape modern corporate Jamaica.
He is survived by his family, friends, and a legacy that spans business, philanthropy, education, and sports.
