Kingston, Jamaica— After more than a quarter-century hiatus, Jamaica is set to return to the global stage at the Mr World competition, with the crowning of Tarique Barrett as Mr World Jamaica 2024. Barrett, a University of the West Indies student pursuing a double major in marketing and accounting, emerged victorious in a glittering ceremony held on Sunday night.
The event saw Barrett crowned by Dahlia Harris, the co-franchise holder of the Miss Jamaica World and Mr World Jamaica pageants. The competition, known for its rigorous tests of fitness, talent, and intellect, returned with heightened anticipation after a 25-year break.
Barrett’s journey to the title was marked by standout performances, particularly in the swimwear and extreme sports challenge categories, where he outperformed his competitors. His achievement was celebrated by an enthusiastic crowd as he now prepares to represent Jamaica on the global stage in Phan Thiet, Vietnam, this November.

The event also recognized other remarkable contestants: Electronics Engineer Tavar Brown claimed the first runner-up position, while Digital Marketing Specialist Dario Lopez secured the second runner-up spot. Rounding out the Top 5 were Model Keneil McLean and 2023 Digicel Rising Star winner Remone Watson, who all showcased exceptional talent and poise throughout the competition.
Barrett’s upcoming participation in the Mr World competition marks a significant moment for Jamaica, as the country returns to this prestigious event after last competing in 1998. Jamaica’s previous representatives, Richard Nevers in 1996 and Kinte Thelwell in 1998, both placed fourth, setting a high standard for Barrett to follow.
Founded in 1996 by the Miss World Organisation, the Mr World competition has evolved into the foremost international event of its kind, attracting contestants from around the globe who compete in a series of physically and mentally challenging events. The current titleholder, Jack Heslewood, an aerospace engineer from England, was crowned in 2019, underscoring the competition’s reputation for drawing highly accomplished participants.
As Jamaica anticipates its return to Mr World, the nation rallies behind Barrett, hopeful that he will not only honor the legacy of past contestants but also bring home the coveted title.
