Montego Bay, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – Jamaica 55 Independence:The Jamaica 55 years of Independence and Emancipation Celebration was launched on Sunday, July 30th at the Calvary Baptist Church in Montego Bay, St James.
The event was well attended and saw a host of dignitaries and some of the nation’s politicians in attendance. Government officials such as Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Peter Phillips, His Worship the Mayor of Montego Bay, Homer Davis, Minister without portfolio Horace Chang, Hon. Olivia Babsy Grange, Minister of Youth and Culture, Mrs Claudette Bryan, JP and Acting Custos Rotolorum for St James and Heroy Clarke, Member of Parliament for Central St James, were among those present.
The event started with the church service where His Worship the Mayor Davis told the congregation that the more the citizens of the parish come together, it will be easier to achieve our goals. The Mayor further stated that criminal-minded individuals are tearing our communities apart, while taking away our children’s inheritance. Unity is strength, he said, and is asking everyone to stand up for the values that keeps us together and make our communities stronger.
Member of Parliament Mr Clarke, encouraged Jamaicans to hold on to their heritage. He commended the parish for the role they have been playing in the Emancipation activities over the years.
Minister Grange in her speech, spoke out that she was very pleased to know that the second city of Montego Bay is the home of the 2017 independence and Emancipation launch.
She stated that Jamaicans should not give up their culture because that was what all our heroes fought for, and promised a very exciting and entertaining 55 years Independence and Emancipation Celebration package, both from Montego Bay and Kingston.
Minister Chang and the Honorable Peter Phillips both contributed to the service by the reading of scriptures.
