St James, Jamaica — The Irwin High School community in St James is in mourning following the tragic death of a grade seven student, Deanna Solomon, who was struck by a MoBay Metro bus on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred just outside the school’s compound shortly after classes ended. Solomon reportedly sustained multiple broken bones and severe injuries from the impact. She was taken to Cornwall Regional Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries Wednesday night.
Nevin Nish, chairman of the Irwin High School board, described the loss as devastating. “The entire school community is in deep shock and mourning… We ask for continued prayers and support,” Nish stated.
He added that exams have been suspended, as the emotional toll on students and staff is overwhelming. Nish also extended sympathies to Solomon’s grieving family.
