Palm Beach, Florida — An armed man was shot and killed early Sunday after attempting to breach the secure perimeter of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, authorities said.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. near the north gate of Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach. According to officials, agents from the United States Secret Service and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office confronted a man who had entered the restricted area carrying what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel container.
Law enforcement officers ordered the individual to drop the weapon. Authorities said the man set down the fuel can but raised the shotgun into a firing position, prompting officers to open fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement personnel were injured.
Investigators identified the man as a 21-year-old resident of North Carolina who had reportedly been listed as missing by family members in the days prior to the incident. Officials have not publicly disclosed a motive.
Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump were in Washington, D.C. at the time of the breach, and no Secret Service protectees were present at the property, authorities confirmed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation in coordination with the Secret Service and local law enforcement agencies. Officials said standard protocol includes a review of evidence from the scene and interviews with responding officers.
The shooting comes amid continued concerns about security threats against high-profile political figures. Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the incident to contact investigators as the inquiry remains ongoing.
