St Mary, Jamaica – The police in St Mary have charged a man in connection with last month’s brutal machete attack on St Ann’s Bay Mayor, Michael Belnavis, at his property in Boscobel.
Thirty-four-year-old Chad Thomas of Ramble in Oracabessa has been charged with housebreaking, wounding with intent, and malicious destruction of property. Thomas, who was shot during the incident, remains in police custody as his court date is being finalized.
According to reports from the Oracabessa police, the attack occurred on the night of Monday, January 20, at approximately 11:00 p.m. Mayor Belnavis had visited his under-construction premises when he noticed a television light on inside. Upon further investigation, he discovered Thomas sitting on a couch.
Belnavis, who reportedly recognized the man but did not know his name, ordered him to leave. However, Thomas allegedly responded by attacking the mayor with a machete, delivering several wounds to his head and hands.
During the altercation, Thomas was shot and injured. The police were called to the scene, and both men were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Following his recovery, Thomas was arrested and later charged after an identification parade was conducted on Monday, February 3.
Authorities are continuing their investigations into the incident. Meanwhile, the police have not disclosed further details on how Thomas gained access to the property.
Thomas is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charges against him.
