USA – Famed American televangelist Jimmy Swaggart has died at the age of 90, his family confirmed in a heartfelt message posted Tuesday morning.
“Today, our hearts are heavy as we share that Brother Swaggart has finished his earthly race and entered into the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ,” the family wrote on Facebook.
The cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Swaggart’s passing comes just weeks after he suffered a heart attack on Father’s Day (June 15) at his Baton Rouge, Louisiana home. According to his son Donnie Swaggart, the reverend collapsed in a vehicle the day before the incident but still chose to attend church for prayer.
Reports are that CPR was administered by two close friends until emergency responders arrived. Family members gathered by his side in the days that followed.
Despite having no known preexisting conditions, Swaggart had been experiencing frequent falls in recent months, said his publicist Megan Kelly.
Controversial Legacy
Jimmy Swaggart rose to fame in the 1980s as one of the most prominent televangelists in the United States, broadcasting sermons to millions through his Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, which he founded in 1955.
However, his career was rocked by scandal in 1988, when he was caught with a prostitute in New Orleans. In a now-infamous televised confession, Swaggart tearfully admitted, “I have sinned.” He was later defrocked by the Assemblies of God, but continued his ministry regardless.
A second scandal followed in 1991, when he was once again found with another prostitute, this time in California.
Despite the controversies, Swaggart remained a central figure in American evangelical circles, publishing more than 50 books and continuing to preach until his final days.
He is survived by his wife and son, Donnie Swaggart.
Jimmy Swaggart was 90 years old.
