St Catherine, Jamaica – The Linstead police are probing the tragic death of a 92-year-old woman who died after a gas stove explosion at her home in the Jericho district of St Catherine on Monday afternoon.
She has been identified as Gloria Oldham, a long-time resident of the rural St Catherine community.
Reports reaching McKoy’s News are that around 4:30 p.m., Oldham was at home when she attempted to light a gas stove. Moments later, a loud explosion rocked the premises, reportedly engulfing her in flames.
The elderly woman sustained severe burns to her body and was rushed to the Linstead Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
Residents of the quiet district were left in shock as they mourned the loss of a beloved community member known for her warmth and independence, despite her advanced age.
The Linstead police have since launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Fire officials are also expected to visit the scene to determine what caused the ignition.
This latest incident adds to growing concerns about gas safety in older homes, especially those with outdated infrastructure or without proper ventilation and maintenance protocols.
