PORTMORE, St. Catherine — The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the fatal police shooting of 68-year-old Robert Gayle, a resident of Lincoln Road in Passage Fort, Portmore, on Sunday, December 1.
According to reports, police officers went to Gayle’s residence around 2:45 p.m., where they were allegedly confronted by him armed with a machete. During what is being described as an attack, the officers reportedly took evasive action, which resulted in Gayle being shot.
Gayle was transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
INDECOM officials have confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the police’s use of force was justified.
Residents of the community expressed shock at the incident, with some questioning the chain of events leading to the shooting. INDECOM is expected to interview witnesses, review the officers’ accounts, and examine any available evidence, including body camera footage, if available.
