Mandeville, Jamaica: An alleged intruder was fatally shot early Sunday morning after he and another man reportedly invaded the property of a policeman on New Acres Drive in Mandeville, Manchester. The deceased has been identified as 41-year-old Hopeton Bryan, a labourer from Somerset district in the parish.
According to a police report, the incident occurred around midnight when the off-duty policeman, who was at home, was alerted by the continuous barking of his dog. Upon investigating, the officer reportedly encountered two men in his yard. One of the men allegedly pointed a firearm at the officer.
Fearing for his life, the policeman discharged a single round from his service pistol, striking Bryan in the neck. Bryan was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The second intruder reportedly fled the scene and is currently being sought by the police.
The incident has been reported to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which is responsible for investigating all incidents involving the discharge of firearms by law enforcement officers. INDECOM will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
