Kingston, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a formal probe into the death of a lock-up inmate, 32-year-old Jerome Williams, who died while receiving treatment at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH).
Williams, a labourer from Old Harbour, St Catherine, reportedly fell ill while in custody at the Old Harbour Police lock-up. He was initially taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, but due to the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to KPH, where he died on Thursday.
INDECOM officials have since stepped in to investigate the circumstances surrounding his detention, illness, and eventual death. The agency is expected to interview officers involved, review custody logs, and obtain medical reports from both hospitals.
At the time of his death, Williams was reportedly being held on undisclosed charges.
This latest incident adds to growing public scrutiny surrounding the treatment of individuals in police custody, as concerns mount over detainee welfare and access to medical care while behind bars.
INDECOM is urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward as investigations continue.
