SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine — The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of a man by police during an alleged early morning confrontation in Spanish Town on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Damian Nembhard, otherwise called ‘Dogie’, of Huckerby Avenue in the Spanish Town area.
According to police reports, at approximately 5:30 a.m., a joint police operation involving personnel from the St Andrew North and St Catherine North divisions was carried out at a premises on Huckerby Avenue, off Brunswick Avenue.
During the operation, a man reportedly looked over a fence, after which police entered the yard. Nembhard allegedly opened fire at the lawmen, who took evasive action and returned fire.
Police say Nembhard then entered the house, where officers followed and later found him suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. A 9mm pistol, reportedly affixed with a magazine containing two rounds of ammunition, was also recovered from the scene.
Nembhard was transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
INDECOM has since commenced a probe into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting, as part of its oversight responsibility regarding police-involved shootings
