The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has commenced an investigation into a police-involved shooting that resulted in the deaths of two men in Greater Portmore, St Catherine, on Monday morning.
The deceased have been identified as 25-year-old electrician Paul Francis and 27-year-old Omar Hooke, both residents of Five West in Greater Portmore.
According to reports, law enforcement officers arrived at the men’s residence shortly before 6:00 a.m. after acting on received information. Upon entering the premises, the police encountered both individuals inside the home.
It is alleged that during an attempt to carry out a search, one of the men became physically confrontational with an officer. The officer reportedly broke free from the altercation moments before the second individual retrieved a firearm from a clothes basket and aimed it in the direction of the police.
Officers are said to have responded by taking evasive action before discharging their weapons, hitting the first man. Reports indicate that the second individual then picked up the firearm and also pointed it at the police, prompting further gunfire. He was also shot during the incident.
Both men sustained injuries and were transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
INDECOM is continuing its probe to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
